Savannah Fly Fishing Charters Savannah Hilton Head Beaufort » Hilton Head http://www.savannahfly.com Fri, 03 Feb 2012 12:23:44 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Fishing, Hilton Head, Savannah, Beaufort FLY OR SPIN! http://www.savannahfly.com/2012/01/dang-it/ http://www.savannahfly.com/2012/01/dang-it/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2012 17:30:17 +0000 scott http://www.savannahfly.com/?p=1882 Well after 7 days of great fishing and perfect weather all good things must end,  now it’s raining and blowing.  This winter has been so nice in comparison to last winter freezing temps and howling north west winds, maybe there is global warming and if so I welcome it for now.  Outlook for the remainder of the winter looks mild so hopefully we’ll have more good days ahead.  Bob Vought and I headed out on monday and found some fish but with clouds and tough wind it made things a bit difficult but not impossible.  Sometime as a guide ya get a bit jammed up at s spot not wanting to leave, then ya do and still get the wrong results. Than you go for a bit of a ride and sometimes find what ya want. Happy Fish!

The sick part was the starting temp was 24 degrees.  Can’t say over the past 20 years I’ve seen that happen too often.  These fish were having some fun and didn’t seem to mind we were there catching them.  14 fish later what a day.  Today was a bit different,  with winds around  20  we had our work cut out for us.   Hank Goodwin and myself found our first flat blown out, second flat blown, third flat blown out, Shit!!  Well I had found a few fish on a section of flat about a month ago so the run was on.  We pulled up and what I thought was a few fish turned out to be about 100.  The fish were tailing and creeping with backs out as well. With the winds blow’n hard and the water a bit muddy, things were tough.  Still managed 6 nice fish w/ 2 of them pushing 10lbs!

That being said, stripers can still be caught, but I wouldn’t make a day of looking for them.   I have been talking to some folks about menhaden along the Atlantic coast and with stocks down 80% of historical highs, our striper, jacks and tarpon irregularities seem to be pacing with this decline.  Food for thought.  This may also  be causing some decline in trout, granted we have had some cold winters in the past, but a combo of cold winters and lack of forage who knows?

Go fishing!  What a nice surprise we had when the stripers we’re on top popping baits.  After catching some nice fish and the blitz subsiding we began pitching plastics and dang if we didn’t catch a nice flounder.  IN all it was a great day fishing!  Ya never know till ya go!

Long time customer Felton Jenkins and  myself headed out with perfect conditions and happy fish yesterday.  After hitting a few schools and catching a few we decide to head out and find something new, and that we did.  We found about a mile long bank of reds willing to play the game. 8 fish later we decided to head it in.  Can’t wait to get back out there and harass a few more.  Be careful in hiring guides in the area, plenty claim they can take you fly fishing in their big bay boats.  If you would like to sight cast reds make sure your with a guide that can get ya there.  Most guides in the big boats are fishing the most beat up fish in the area.  All day yesterday we saw one boat fishing,  and he wasn’t even flats fishing this makes for very happy reds on the flats.,  This not Shelter Cove fishing with  7 boats around you.

Anyone can go bait fishing but ya better have the right boat and know the gig to be successful at fly fishing. I have been slack lately not posting to many pics, but the reds have been going nuts around Cane Patch as well as other areas.  There have also been some stripers busting up some baits on top making for some cool action.

Backs and Tails

The fall rush is on!!  Reds on the high and low tides are trying to pack on the pounds for the winter.  The trout bite has really been heating up as well.  The past couple of weeks I have been getting some great reports of trout hitting on the incoming tide.  There are also a bunch of tarpon around now for the mullet run.  Plenty of inside creek mouths have had a good number of fish holding on them.  I know all to well after running over a good number of fish I was not expecting to see there. Damn It!!

Now they are showing themselves again and the wind goes 20 NE.  Oh well back to old reliable.  The reds are really getting after some shrimp on the mud flats making for some fun top water bites on poppers. After this blow I think we may have a late season run on tarpon.  Reports are there are still plenty of fish in the Charleston area, as the water temps cool they will move back thru.  Trout bite is coming around, and hopefully will continue thru the  winter.

"Salt Life"

To Say the least we have been wearing some Jaws out the past week.   Andy Bowen and Will Abbott had a good time busting fish on every flat we poled.  That Will is one funny F@#ker.   I have more pics to come, time to go fishing!!   Has CCA Georgia done anything to ensure a great fishery along the coast, The answer is no.  Oh,I forgot the failed one time stocking program.
