Tarpon report Hilton Head Savannah Beaufort fly and light tackle fishing charters

Mark the melon makin things happen on some early fall poons

Well there are still plenty of poon around, I took the weekend off and sent a buddy of mine into an area that has been holding plenty of silver.  He went 1-4 on Sat,  so I couldn’t take it and loaded up the boat on sun. The ocean was glass ,and as we approached the honey hole you could see plenty of poon rolling.  We get our gear to together and the wind just starts to pick up ever so light out of the east and this seemed to put the fish off a bit. It seemed as though this spread out the poon and slowed their roll, making it tougher to pin point their location.  Still fun tossing flies at 100lbs plus fish.  Last week was good with a couple of poon put in the air but not landed,  The reds though proved to be  a bit tougher.  THe schools have been getting the beat down, so stealth and good cast are the call.  This is when a guides boat can make or break the day.  Big bay boats, pangas, or oversized flats boat just don’t cut it days when the fish are jumpy at low water, and at high water a wader is at a complete disadvantage.  Chris Webber has been tying up some new crickets and the results have been good.  He has a runaway shrimp that has been proving itself on the low tide fishing anyone need his contact info just give me  a call.  Ya know what the best thing is about our tarpon fishery, is that when they are here every bait soaker is on house creek, pine log, or cabbage, stumbling all over themselves for reds and missing all the fun.
